How to watch 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix: start time, F1 live stream and TV schedule

The 1.2km-run down to Turn 1 at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez means there will be plenty of racing action from the offset of 2023’s Mexican Grand Prix — even with both F1 championships now decided.

Max Verstappen added another emphatic exclamation point to his third consecutive drivers’ title with his fifteenth race victory of the season in Austin — breaking the record for the most points ever scored in a single F1 season in the process. But after a 1,200km trip south of the US border, the Dutchman’s success will inevitably take a back seat to the home support for his team-mate and local hero Sergio Perez.

The Mexican driver has never quite achieved victory on home soil — finishing third in 2021 and ‘22 — and in current poor form, the chances of besting Verstappen in a straight fight are slim. But with rumours of retirement circulating, could Perez produce one last Red Bull masterclass as part of a fairytale ending to his F1 career?

It would certainly be a great story, but by no means will the rest of the field make such a feat so simple. McLaren, Mercedes and Ferrari will all be in the hunt for both pole position and victory, with certain aspects of the 4.3km circuit suiting some cars more than others.

Nevertheless, no matter who reaches the chequered flag first, the electric atmosphere created by the fans in Mexico certainly makes wheel-to-wheel racing unique and is one grand prix you definitely won’t want to miss.

How to watch F1: live stream and TV details for 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix

A return to the traditional weekend format will be refreshing for some after back-to-back sprint race weekends in Qatar and the USA. Three hour-long practice sessions will allow drivers and teams to hone in on ideal set-up and strategy choices, before hitting the track for an action packed qualifying session on Saturday and a 71-lap Grand Prix on Sunday.

Live TV: All sessions will be broadcast live on Sky Sports F1 starting with Free Practice 1 on Friday at 7.30pm.

Highlights: Channel 4 will show highlights of the weekend, with action from qualifying shown on Sunday morning, followed by race highlights on Monday morning.

 

Mexico City GP circuit and details

At only 4km in length, the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez is one of the shorter circuits on the F1 calendar, Verstappen capturing pole here in 2022 in just over 1min 17sec. But its high-speed nature is often an attack on drivers’ senses and provides many overtaking opportunities throughout almost every sector.

Three DRS-assisted straights entices late braking into Turns 1, 4 and 12, while the iconic Foro Sol Stadium section toward the end of the lap slows cars to almost a halt, as they navigate their way through a technical sequence of corners — all the while roared on by thousands of track-side fans.

In 2022, Max Verstappen secured his second consecutive Mexican GP victory — leading Lewis Hamilton‘s Mercedes over the line on both occasions, with Perez trailing in third. With similar characteristics to other high-speed circuits such as Monza and Silverstone, an identical podium could be on the cards for 2023’s visit, with possible surprise cameo’s from McLaren‘s Lando Norris or Oscar Piastri.

The Grand Prix’s late placement on the calendar ensures that drivers will at least get a break from the usual searing temperatures, with a high of just 25°C across the weekend with no rain expected.
